Main Characters – Obsession

Elena Gilbert

Elena Gilbert is the main character in The Vampire Diaries. The show heavily follows her life and the struggles she faces after meeting and falling in love with Stefan Salvatore, a 171-year-old vampire. When we first meet Elena, she in high school and has just lost her parents. Throughout the show Elena learns of her adoption and family history relating to vampires and the supernatural occurrences in her life. Elena is most known for her compassion, courage, and loyalty to friends and family.

Stefan Salvatore

Stefan Salvatore is a 171 year old vampire originally from Mystic Falls VA. Stefan was turned into a vampire in 1864 with his brother when his father shot them for attempting to save a vampire. Throughout his life, Stefan has struggled with being a vampire and longed to be human. Because of Stefans previous addiction to human blood, he attempts a diet of only animal blood. To document his life Stefan keeps a diary, justifying the name of the show. Once Stefan meets Elena, he aims to protect her from the town’s supernatural threats and dangers.

Damon Salvatore

Damon Salvatore is a 178 year old vampire and brother of Stefan Salvatore. Damon is introduced in the show as Stefans enemy, always sabotaging and antagonizing him. Damon is known as the “bad” brother between the two and rarely cares about human life. While Damon has many selfish motives, we slowly see redeeming qualities in him throughout the show such as his humor, bravery, and love for Stefan and Elena.

Katherine Peirce
(Katerina Petrova)

Katherine Peirce is a 500-year-old vampire and first love of Stefan and Damon. Katherine Peirce was turned into a vampire from suicide while running from a vampire named Klaus who wanted to use her for a sacrifice. Katherine then became evil and cold, using her powers to manipulate people like Stefan and Damon. The real kicker of Katherine’s character is she looks exactly like Elena!…We find out why later in the show.

Caroline Forbes

Caroline Forbes is head of the cheerleading team, best friend to Elena and daughter of the Mystic Falls sherif. Caroline is first introduced as a shallow control freak, only caring about things like school dances and boys. Shortly after Caroline is turned into a vampire, she gains strength and confidence. From then on, throughout the series we see Caroline always lending a helping hand to those she cares about.

Bonnie Bennett

Bonnie Bennett is another one of Elena’s childhood best friends and comes from a long line of witches. As a new witch Bonnie struggles with control of her powers but is undoubtedly the strongest supernatural being of them all. Because of Bonnies power, the characters on the show are often asking her for help with spells and other magic.

Matt Donovan

Matt is Elena’s ex-boyfriend and quarterback of the football team at Mystic Falls Highschool. Matt often appears in the show as Elenas friend and one of the only human characters. Throughout the show Matt struggles primarily with his family and romantic life.

Tyler Lockwood

Tyler Lockwood is included in Elenas friend group and introduced to the show as a hot-headed jock. Later in the show, he discovers that the werewolf gene runs in Tylers family, meaning that if Tyler were to ever kill anyone, he would become a werewolf on every full moon. Throughout the series we see Tylers struggles with his family and werewolf curse.

Doppelgängers:

It is revealed in the show that the two main characters, Stefan ad Elena are doppelgangers. The show explains doppelgangers as living doubles of each other. This means that there are seperate characters that look exactly alike.
